Vehicle Registration Fees by State: How Every State Calculates Your Bill

Registering a typical gas car costs about $45 to $200 a year in most states, and the middle state charges about $77. South Carolina ($20 a year), Georgia ($20 at renewal) and Kentucky ($20.50) are the cheapest. Nevada ($488), New Hampshire ($408) and Wyoming ($390) cost the most because they tax the car's value.

Those figures come from one worked example per state, usually a 2022 gas sedan at renewal. A newer, pricier or heavier vehicle can cost much more, and some low-fee states bill property tax separately.

Key Takeaways

  • Half of states land between about $45 and $200 a year for a typical car.
  • States that tax vehicle value, such as Nevada, New Hampshire and Wyoming, have the biggest bills.
  • The cheapest states, including South Carolina, Kentucky and Alabama, collect county property tax on a separate bill.
  • Electric cars pay an extra fee in most states, on top of these amounts.

How Do States Calculate Registration Fees?

Every state starts with a base fee, then most add charges tied to the vehicle or to where you live. The main factors are value, weight, age, fuel type and county add-ons.

Value-based states charge a percentage of what the car is worth, which shrinks as it ages. Alabama and California both use value, though California's vehicle license fee is the bigger part of a typical bill.

Weight-based states charge more for heavier vehicles, and age-based states lower the fee as a car gets older. Fuel type matters too: Arkansas, for example, adds $200 a year for electric cars and $50 for hybrids.

Flat-Fee States

Some states charge close to one set amount for every passenger car. Vermont charges $91 a year, Illinois $151 and Delaware $40.

Connecticut charges $159 for a three-year renewal, about $53 a year, and Arizona pairs flat fees with a value-based tax. Missouri sets its fee by taxable horsepower, so a typical car pays $30.25 a year.

A flat fee is easy to budget for, but it is not always the whole bill. Connecticut towns, for example, bill property tax on the car separately.

Which States Charge by Vehicle Value?

24 states use vehicle value as a fee factor. They are Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

These states produce most of the highest bills. Nevada's $488 example is mostly a $364 Governmental Services Tax on a $40,000 car, and Wyoming's $390 is mostly a $360 county fee on a $30,000 car.

Value taxes fall as the car ages, so the same vehicle gets cheaper to register each year. Michigan, for example, takes 10% off the base tax at each of the first two renewals.

Which States Charge by Weight or Age?

17 states use weight and 24 use age, and some use both. Heavier vehicles and newer vehicles usually pay more.

Weight-based states include Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland and Texas. Florida's 3,500-pound sedan pays $45.60 a year, while Maryland's pays $120.50 including its EMS surcharge.

Age-based states include Alaska, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, Oklahoma and Utah. Montana's 2023 car pays $236 a year, and Utah adds a $110 uniform age-based fee to a 2022 sedan's bill.

Where Do County and Local Add-Ons Apply?

22 states add county or local charges to registration. They are Alabama, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Local charges can be large. Oregon's Multnomah County adds $112 to a two-year renewal, and Tennessee's Davidson County adds a $55 wheel tax to a $26.50 state fee.

Others are small. Pennsylvania's Allegheny County adds $5, and Ohio's deputy registrar fee is $8.
