How Iowa fees work

Iowa's annual registration fee for passenger cars, SUVs and light trucks is 1% of the vehicle's list price plus 40 cents per 100 pounds of weight. The value portion drops to 75% of that rate after seven model years and 50% after nine, and cars twelve or more model years old pay a flat $50. Battery electric cars add $130 a year and plug-in hybrids $65. Buying a car adds a one-time 5% fee for new registration on the purchase price and a $30 title fee.

Late registration

Iowa Code 321.134: starting the first day of the second month of the registration year, a 5% penalty on the annual fee is added, plus 5% more each following month (minimum $5). After 24 months delinquent, a flat 150% penalty applies.

Worked example

2024 gas SUV with a $30,000 list price and 3,500 lb weight, renewing in 2026: $300 value fee (1% of $30,000) + $14 weight fee (35 x $0.40) = $314.

Listed total: $314.00

Common questions

How are Iowa registration fees calculated?

Iowa's annual registration fee for passenger cars, SUVs and light trucks is 1% of the vehicle's list price plus 40 cents per 100 pounds of weight. The value portion drops to 75% of that rate after seven model years and 50% after nine, and cars twelve or more model years old pay a flat $50. Battery electric cars add $130 a year and plug-in hybrids $65. Buying a car adds a one-time 5% fee for new registration on the purchase price and a $30 title fee.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with Iowa Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division (county treasurers). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

DRAFT: Iowa Code 321.113 steps the value fee down for vehicles 'more than seven model years old', but no official source found (the Code, the Legislative Services Agency fiscal note, Iowa DOT pages and Iowa Administrative Code chapter 761) says whether the current model year counts as year 1. The calculator treats age as 2026 minus the model year (a 2019 car is 7 and still pays the full 1%). If Iowa counts the current model year as year 1, each step comes one year earlier. Cars more than seven model years old pay at least $50 in total; the calculator does not enforce that minimum, so a light, low-priced older car may show slightly less. Use the manufacturer's list price (MSRP) when new and the weight fixed by the Iowa DOT, not the current market value. Vehicles registered to the same owner since before January 1, 2009 never pay more than the prior year's fee on renewal. Not modeled. Buying a vehicle triggers Iowa's one-time fee for new registration of 5% of the purchase price (Iowa Code 321.105A), less trade-in. Not included; it is a percentage of the purchase price, not list price. Ordinary hybrids without a plug pay no extra fee. Iowa also charges fuel-type taxes at EV charging stations, not included.
