Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT)7% of vehicle value

One-time 7.0% of the vehicle's fair market value, paid when the vehicle is titled after a purchase or transfer. Fair market value is set using the DOR motor vehicle assessment manual, so it may differ from the price paid. New Georgia residents pay 3% instead, and some family transfers pay 0.5%. TAVT replaces sales tax and annual ad valorem tax.

How Georgia fees work

Georgia's yearly registration fee for a regular passenger car is a flat $20, and all-electric vehicles add an annual alternative fuel fee of $238.59 for registrations from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The big cost is the one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT): 7.0% of the vehicle's fair market value when you buy it, or 3% for new Georgia residents, which replaces sales tax and the old annual vehicle tax. A title costs $18.

Late registration

If you don't renew during your county's registration period (normally by your birthday), Georgia adds a penalty of 25% of the license plate fees ($5 on the $20 fee) plus 10% of any annual ad valorem tax due (minimum $5). Late title application is a $10 penalty, and late TAVT on a private sale is 10% plus 1% a month.

Common questions

How are Georgia registration fees calculated?

Georgia's yearly registration fee for a regular passenger car is a flat $20, and all-electric vehicles add an annual alternative fuel fee of $238.59 for registrations from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The big cost is the one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT): 7.0% of the vehicle's fair market value when you buy it, or 3% for new Georgia residents, which replaces sales tax and the old annual vehicle tax. A title costs $18.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with Georgia Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicle Division. Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

The calculator applies the 7% purchase rate. New residents registering a car they already own pay TAVT at 3% of fair market value. Vehicles bought before March 1, 2013 and still under the old system pay an annual ad valorem tax set by county and local millage rates. DOR publishes an estimator but no per-county table, so it is not included. County tag offices may charge a $1 mailing fee. Emissions inspections in metro Atlanta counties are paid at the inspection station and are not included. Specialty and prestige plate fees are extra and not included.
