State registration fee$46.00

HRS 249-31(a): every vehicle pays a $46 annual state vehicle registration fee, collected by the county together with the county fees.

State vehicle weight tax$0.0175 per 1 lb

HRS 249-33(a): 1.75 cents a pound of net weight up to and including 4,000 lbs (a 3,320-lb car pays $58.10). Heavier bands (2.00 cents to 7,000 lbs, 2.25 cents to 10,000 lbs, flat $300 above) apply the higher rate to the whole weight; the calculator stops above 4,000 lbs instead of guessing (see the next line).

Weight limit check (over 4,000 lbs)Not published

Adds nothing. Over 4,000 lbs the state rate jumps to 2.00 cents a pound on the whole weight (HRS 249-33), and trucks over 6,500 lbs pay higher county commercial rates; the engine cannot switch per-pound rates by weight band, so vehicles over 4,000 lbs get a 'confirm with the agency' message instead of a wrong total.

County vehicle weight tax (Honolulu)$0.07 per 1 lb; minimum $12.00

ROH 15A-3.1: 7 cents a pound of net weight for passenger vehicles (since January 1, 2019) and for noncommercial trucks of 6,500 lbs or less certified as noncommercial; $12 minimum. Commercial vehicles pay 7.5 cents. Bill 47 (2026), which would cut the passenger rate to 5.5 cents from July 1, 2027, was not law when checked.

How Hawaii fees work

Hawaii registration is renewed every year with your county, and most of the cost is weight tax. Every vehicle pays the $46 state registration fee and a state weight tax of 1.75 cents a pound (up to 4,000 lbs), then the county adds its own per-pound weight tax and flat fees: 7 cents a pound in Honolulu, 3.5 cents on Maui, 2 cents on Kauai and 1.25 cents in Hawaii County. Honolulu's own example puts a 3,320-lb car at $367 a year.

The listed registration period is 12 months. Agency information

Electric & hybrid surcharges

Electric: $50.00 in the listed schedule. Fee source

Choose the matching fuel type in the calculator to include the applicable surcharge.

Late registration

Renewing late adds $8 state weight tax penalty plus a county penalty: $8 for passenger vehicles in Honolulu, Hawaii County and Maui ($20 for commercial), and 20% of the county and state weight taxes on Kauai.

Confirm deadlines and penalties with the agency

Worked example

Honolulu's own worked example: a 3,320-lb gas car renewing in the City and County of Honolulu pays $46 state registration + $58.10 state weight tax (1.75 cents x 3,320 lbs) + $20 county registration + $232.40 county weight tax (7 cents x 3,320 lbs) + $10 highway beautification + $0.50 emblem = $367.

Common questions

How are Hawaii registration fees calculated?

Hawaii registration is renewed every year with your county, and most of the cost is weight tax. Every vehicle pays the $46 state registration fee and a state weight tax of 1.75 cents a pound (up to 4,000 lbs), then the county adds its own per-pound weight tax and flat fees: 7 cents a pound in Honolulu, 3.5 cents on Maui, 2 cents on Kauai and 1.25 cents in Hawaii County. Honolulu's own example puts a 3,320-lb car at $367 a year.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with City and County of Honolulu, Customer Services Department, Division of Motor Vehicles (registration is run by each county's director of finance). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

Vehicles over 4,000 lbs net weight are not calculated. Hawaii's state weight tax switches to 2.00 cents a pound on the whole weight above 4,000 lbs (2.25 cents above 7,000, flat $300 above 10,000), and the engine cannot change a per-pound rate by weight band. Rather than show a wrong total, the calculator asks those owners to confirm with their county. Adding a weight range filter to the engine would let these bands be modeled exactly. Rates shown are for passenger vehicles and certified noncommercial trucks of 6,500 lbs or less. Commercial vehicles pay higher county rates (Honolulu 7.5 cents, Hawaii County 2.5 cents, Maui 5.91 cents, Kauai 3 cents a pound) that are not modeled. Honolulu's own example: a 3,320-lb vehicle costs $367 a year ($46 state registration + $58.10 state weight tax + $20 county registration + $232.40 county weight tax + $10 highway beautification + $0.50 emblem). The calculator matches it. Honolulu Bill 47 (2026) would cut the passenger weight tax to 5.5 cents a pound from July 1, 2027; it had not been enacted when checked. Maui's FY2027 rate is unchanged at 3.5 cents. No annual emblem fee was found in the Kauai County Code, and no county EV or hybrid fee was found for Honolulu, Hawaii County or Kauai; only Maui charges a county highway improvement fee ($100 EV, $50 hybrid). Honolulu's separate fee table still lists a $7 beautification fee for non-U-Drive vehicles; its registration page and worked example use $10, which is used here. Honolulu charges a 2.35% card fee at counters, and kiosks add 2.5% plus a $4 remote transaction fee. Hawaii residents on active military duty are exempt from weight taxes on one vehicle. None of these are modeled.
