Registration fee, 1980 and newer (weight class 7 or 8)Up to 3,499 lbs: $46.50; Remaining weights: $71.50

MVC registration fee chart: class 7 (under 3,500 lbs) $46.50 and class 8 (over 3,500 lbs) $71.50 for cars older than two years. Classes 7 and 8 follow the 1971-1979 rows, so they cover 1980 and newer. Weight is the manufacturer's shipping weight; the chart does not say which class a car of exactly 3,500 lbs falls in, so the calculator treats 3,500 lbs as over.

model year min: 1980

Newer-car fee (within two model years)$12.50

MVC chart: cars within two years pay $59.00 (class 7) or $84.00 (class 8), $12.50 more than older cars. The MVC 4-year calculator adds this $12.50 a year for the current or next year's model and last year's model, and not for a two-year-old model, so the calculator applies it at age 0-1.

Zero emission vehicle (ZEV) fee$270.00

MVC: from July 1, 2024 ZEVs pay an annual fee of $250 on top of the registration fee, at initial registration and every renewal, and it rises $10 a year for four years. That makes it $260 from July 1, 2025, $270 from July 1, 2026 (used here), $280 from July 1, 2027 and $290 from July 1, 2028. It applies to vehicles certified as ZEVs under California Air Resources Board standards, so plug-in hybrids are not charged here.

How New Jersey fees work

New Jersey charges an annual passenger car registration fee based on the car's weight class and model year. Most cars from 1980 on pay $46.50 a year under 3,500 lbs or $71.50 over 3,500 lbs, and cars within two model years pay $12.50 more ($59 or $84). Zero emission vehicles also pay an annual ZEV fee that started at $250 on July 1, 2024 and rises $10 a year, so it is $270 for registrations from July 1, 2026. Brand-new cars must pay four years of registration up front, and a title costs $60.

Late registration

The MVC registration fee page lists no late-renewal fee for passenger cars; driving with an expired registration can bring a ticket.

Worked example

2022 gas sedan weighing 3,200 lbs, annual renewal: $46.50 registration fee (1980-or-newer car under 3,500 lbs, more than two model years old). An electric car would add the $270 ZEV fee (from July 1, 2026).

Common questions

How are New Jersey registration fees calculated?

New Jersey charges an annual passenger car registration fee based on the car's weight class and model year. Most cars from 1980 on pay $46.50 a year under 3,500 lbs or $71.50 over 3,500 lbs, and cars within two model years pay $12.50 more ($59 or $84). Zero emission vehicles also pay an annual ZEV fee that started at $250 on July 1, 2024 and rises $10 a year, so it is $270 for registrations from July 1, 2026. Brand-new cars must pay four years of registration up front, and a title costs $60.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

All recurring amounts are for one year. Brand-new cars (never titled) must pay a full four-year registration at the first registration, and new ZEVs pay four years of the ZEV fee up front (for example $270 + $280 + $290 + $290 for a new ZEV registered July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 under the MVC's $10-a-year schedule). The calculator shows one year; use the MVC 4-Year Registration Fee Calculator for a new car. The MVC 4-year calculator page still adds $250 a year for ZEVs; the MVC fee page's $10-a-year increase schedule gives $270 for registrations from July 1, 2026, which is used here. Owners 65 or older and people with a disability pay $7.00 less on every passenger registration category. Recipients of PAAD, SSI or Lifeline get discounted registration fees. Neither discount is included. A title costs $85 instead of $60 when there is a lien. Plate fees, personalized plates, the 6.625% sales tax on a purchase and any dealer fees are not included. Commuter vans (class 9) pay $71.50, or $84.00 within two years. Non-commercial trucks are charged by gross weight and are not covered here. The newer-car fee is applied to cars up to one year old by model year (calculator age 0-1), following the MVC calculator; the MVC decides the exact cutoff.
