How New Mexico fees work

New Mexico sets passenger car registration by factory shipping weight and age: from July 1, 2026 the base fee is $33.75 (2,000 lbs or less), $48.75 (2,001 to 3,000 lbs) or $70 (over 3,000 lbs) for a car's first five years, dropping to $26.25, $38.75 or $56.25 after that. Every registration year adds a $2 administrative fee, a $2 insurance-enforcement (MFRA) fee, a 50-cent beautification fee and a $1.50 tire recycling fee, so a heavy newer car costs $76 a year. You can register for one or two years; two years costs double. When you buy a car and title it, you also pay a 4% motor vehicle excise tax on the price paid, a $3 title transaction fee and a $2 administrative fee.

Cost factors: weight, age, value.

Late registration

If you drive or move the car after the registration expires, MVD charges a $10 penalty within 30 days of expiration. After more than 30 days, the penalty is 75% of the registration fee or $10, whichever is greater (NMSA 66-3-19(E)). A $20 late transfer penalty applies if you do not apply for title within 30 days of buying the car, and the excise tax carries a 50% penalty after 90 days.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

These are the fees in effect from July 1, 2026 under Laws 2026, ch. 4 (SB 2), which raised passenger registration fees by about 25%. MVD's registration web pages still quote the old $27 to $62 range ($54 to $124 for two years); the MVD Fees Manual revised Aug. 24, 2026 shows the new amounts. Electric and plug-in hybrid fees start Jan. 1, 2027 and are not included yet: EVs will pay an extra $70 a year in 2027, $80 in 2028 and $90 from 2029; plug-in hybrids will pay $35, $40 and $45. Regular hybrids pay no extra fee. Two-year registrations are charged at double the one-year amounts, as the MVD fee ranges on the registration pages show. Renewing online, by phone or at a kiosk gives up to a 5% discount on the base fee, but online card payments carry a $1.65 card fee (1.99% over $275). The calculator does not apply the discount or card fee. Veterans with a certificate from the Department of Veterans Services get a one-third reduction of the registration fee (NMSA 66-6-7); this is not modeled. Standard yellow and Centennial turquoise plates have no separate fee. Specialty and personalized plate fees vary and are not included. Private MVD partner offices may add their own convenience fees. The MVD Fees Manual lists no county or local registration fees for passenger cars.
