How Kansas fees work

Kansas registers cars for one year. The state registration fee is $30 for a passenger car with a gross weight of 4,500 lbs or less and $40 above that; from January 1, 2026, hybrids pay $70, plug-in hybrids $100 and all-electric cars $165 instead. Every registration adds a $5 service fee and $7.25 in state surcharges, so a typical gas car pays $42.25 in fees. The biggest part of most Kansas renewals is the county motor vehicle property tax, which is billed with the registration but depends on the car's value and local tax rates.

Late registration

K.S.A. 8-135(b): a $2 penalty is added if you do not apply to register within 60 days after buying a vehicle. The Division of Vehicles pages reviewed list no separate late-renewal fee; driving on an expired registration can bring a ticket.

Worked example

Gas sedan with a 3,500 lb gross weight, renewing: $30 registration fee + $5 service fee + $4 modernization surcharge + $2 Highway Patrol surcharge + $1.25 registration surcharge = $42.25. County property tax and any county fee are billed separately.

Common questions

How are Kansas registration fees calculated?

Kansas registers cars for one year. The state registration fee is $30 for a passenger car with a gross weight of 4,500 lbs or less and $40 above that; from January 1, 2026, hybrids pay $70, plug-in hybrids $100 and all-electric cars $165 instead. The biggest part of most Kansas renewals is the county motor vehicle property tax, which is billed with the registration but depends on the car's value and local tax rates.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with Kansas Department of Revenue, Division of Vehicles (renewals handled by county treasurers). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

County motor vehicle property tax is collected with every registration and is usually the largest part of the bill. It depends on the vehicle's value, age and class and on your local mill levy, so it is not included; use the Department of Revenue's Vehicle Property Tax Lookup for an estimate. Counties may add their own registration fee of up to $5 where the county has more than one registration office, or up to $2.50 where it has one (K.S.A. 8-145d). Which counties charge it and how much is not published in one state list, so it is not included. The $70, $100 and $165 hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric fees replace the $30/$40 weight-based fee; they took effect January 1, 2026 (L. 2025, ch. 64). Buying a vehicle adds state and local sales tax on the purchase price, paid when you title it. It depends on the price and your local rate, so it is not included. Transferring your current plate to another vehicle costs $1.50 plus any difference in registration fee (K.S.A. 8-135(a)). An optional state park motor vehicle permit can be bought at registration (K.S.A. 8-134(f)); its price is set by Kansas Wildlife and Parks and is not included. Kansas renews on a staggered monthly system tied to the owner's last name; first registrations may be prorated. The calculator shows a full 12-month amount.
