Common questions

How are New Hampshire registration fees calculated?

New Hampshire charges two things each year: a state registration fee based on gross vehicle weight, and a town permit fee based on the original list price (MSRP) and the model year. The town fee is usually the larger part. Electric and plug-in hybrid cars pay an extra state surcharge.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

The town permit fee uses MSRP rounded to the nearest $100 and is rounded to the nearest dollar. The calculator maps age from model year; towns apply the rate by model year at the time of registration, so results can differ by one tier. Cities over 50,000 people may add up to 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 extra mills (RSA 261:154). Towns may also add a $3 reclamation fee and a transportation fee of up to $5 (RSA 261:153 V-VI). These are not included. Town clerks acting as agents may charge up to $3 (RSA 261:74-d). A $5 electronic processing fee may apply to some transactions (RSA 261:141-b). New Hampshire has no sales tax on vehicles.
