Annual registration feeUp to 2 years: $69.00; Up to 6 years: $57.00; Older vehicles: $45.00

Idaho Code 49-402(1): passenger vehicles up to 8,000 lbs pay $69 when one and two years old, $57 when three to six years old and $45 when seven years and older (the statute lists 7-8 and over 8 separately, both $45). ITD's fee table shows the same three amounts. The calculator uses 2026 minus the model year and puts a current-model-year car in the $69 group, matching ITD's estimator, which labels the top tier 'zero to two years old'.

How Idaho fees work

Idaho registers passenger cars every year for a flat fee set by the vehicle's age: $69 for vehicles one and two years old, $57 for three to six years old and $45 for seven years and older. Every registration adds a $1.25 emergency medical services fee, and the county assessor's office that handles it adds its own administrative fee of $3 to $14. Electric vehicles pay an extra $140 a year and plug-in hybrids an extra $75; ordinary hybrids pay no extra fee.

Common questions

How are Idaho registration fees calculated?

Idaho registers passenger cars every year for a flat fee set by the vehicle's age: $69 for vehicles one and two years old, $57 for three to six years old and $45 for seven years and older. Every registration adds a $1.25 emergency medical services fee, and the county assessor's office that handles it adds its own administrative fee of $3 to $14. Electric vehicles pay an extra $140 a year and plug-in hybrids an extra $75; ordinary hybrids pay no extra fee.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with Idaho Transportation Department, Division of Motor Vehicles (ITD DMV). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

Idaho Code 40-827 lets a county's voters approve an extra county vehicle registration fee of up to twice the state fee, and ITD's online estimator asks separately whether the vehicle is in Ada County to add a highway district registration fee. ITD does not publish the per-county amounts on its fee page, so these local option fees are not included; Ada County residents should expect to pay more than this calculator shows. The county admin fee applies when a county motor vehicle office handles the registration. ITD online and kiosk renewals may carry their own processing or card fees instead, which are not included. Age boundaries: Idaho Code 49-402 groups vehicles by years old without defining how model year maps to age. The calculator treats age as 2026 minus the model year; a car right at a tier boundary may land one tier differently at the county office. Check with ITD's estimator if your car is 2, 3, 6 or 7 years old. Registrations may be issued for more or less than 12 months with the fee prorated monthly (Idaho Code 49-402(1)); the calculator shows the 12-month fee. Since July 1, 2026 ITD no longer issues registration stickers or replaces plates every ten years. New registrations also pay the one-time title fee ($14 plus the county title admin fee). Sales or use tax on a purchase and any initial plate fees are not included.
