How New York fees work

New York registers passenger cars for two years. The state registration fee is set by vehicle weight, from $26 (1,650 lbs or less) to $140 (6,951 lbs or more), with a $32.50 two-year minimum for cars with six or more cylinders and electric vehicles. Most counties and New York City add a vehicle use tax of $10 to $60 for two years, and the 12 counties of the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District add a $50 supplemental fee. A first registration also pays $25 for plates and $50 for the title, plus sales tax.

The listed registration period is 24 months. Agency information

Cost factors: weight, county.

Late registration

The DMV publishes no late renewal fee. You must renew before the registration expires; you can renew online up to one year after expiration, and a registration expired for more than one year must be registered again at a DMV office or by mail. Driving on an expired registration can bring a traffic ticket.
