How Arkansas fees work

Arkansas registers passenger cars every year, with the fee set by weight: $17 for cars of 3,000 pounds or less, $25 for 3,001 to 4,500 pounds and $30 above 4,500 pounds, plus a $2.50 validation decal fee. Electric cars pay an extra $200 a year, plug-in hybrids $100 and regular hybrids $50. A new registration adds a $10 title fee. You must assess the car with your county assessor and pay personal property tax before you can renew, and buying a car triggers sales tax; neither is included.

Common questions

How are Arkansas registration fees calculated?

Arkansas registers passenger cars every year, with the fee set by weight: $17 for cars of 3,000 pounds or less, $25 for 3,001 to 4,500 pounds and $30 above 4,500 pounds, plus a $2.50 validation decal fee. You must assess the car with your county assessor and pay personal property tax before you can renew, and buying a car triggers sales tax; neither is included.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA), Office of Motor Vehicle. Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

All recurring amounts are for one year. Fees are the same for new and renewal registrations; a new registration adds the $10 title fee. Before renewing, Arkansas law requires you to assess the vehicle with your county assessor and pay all personal property taxes owed, and to carry liability insurance. County personal property tax is set locally and is not included. Buying a car triggers Arkansas sales tax, not included: 6.5% state rate on new vehicles (7% for Texarkana residents), 3.5% on used vehicles priced $4,000 to $9,999, none on used vehicles under $4,000, plus local taxes capped at $25 for each 1% of local tax. Plug-in hybrids pay $100 and regular hybrids $50. Arkansas Code 27-14-614 exempts electric and hybrid vehicles registered with certain military service and veterans special plates with a permanent decal; specialty plate fees are not included. Renewing online through the Arkansas.gov portal or by phone may add a processing fee that is not on the DFA fee schedule; not included. Duplicate titles cost $10, and an expedited title at the Central Revenue Office in Little Rock costs another $10. The electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid fees come from Arkansas Code 27-14-614(b) as amended by Act 376 of 2021. Later acts amending that section (Act 211 of 2023 and Act 419 of 2025) change only how the revenue is distributed, not the fee amounts.
