How Nevada fees work

Nevada registers cars for one year. Every car pays a $33 registration fee plus the Governmental Services Tax, which is 4% of a DMV valuation set at 35% of the original MSRP and reduced each year from 100% when new to a floor of 15% from the ninth year, with a $16 minimum. Clark and Churchill counties add a supplemental tax of 1% of the same valuation. A first Nevada title costs $28.25.

The listed registration period is 12 months. Agency information

Cost factors: flat, value, age, county.

Late registration

Nevada has no grace period; registration expires on the date shown. Late renewals pay the full year ahead, the prorated fees and taxes for the unregistered period, a $6 per month penalty on the past-due registration fee and a 10% penalty on past-due Governmental Services Taxes ($6 minimum, calculated every 15 days).

Confirm deadlines and penalties with the agency

Worked example

2022 gas car with a $40,000 original MSRP, renewing in Clark County: $33 registration fee + $364 Governmental Services Tax (4% x 35% x $40,000 x 65%) + $91 supplemental tax (1% of the same $9,100 valuation). The DMV estimator returns the same $488.

Common questions

How are Nevada registration fees calculated?

Nevada registers cars for one year. Every car pays a $33 registration fee plus the Governmental Services Tax, which is 4% of a DMV valuation set at 35% of the original MSRP and reduced each year from 100% when new to a floor of 15% from the ninth year, with a $16 minimum. Clark and Churchill counties add a supplemental tax of 1% of the same valuation. A first Nevada title costs $28.25.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

Enter the vehicle's original MSRP (without options) as the vehicle value; the DMV uses that figure for life. The DMV's own estimator rounds each tax to whole dollars, so its results can differ from this calculator by under $1. Age follows the DMV estimator: current year minus model year (a 2022 car is taxed at 65% in 2026). NRS 371.060 treats a vehicle as new (100%) only if it has never been registered anywhere, so a current-model-year car on a renewal may actually be taxed at 95%. The supplemental tax applies only in Clark and Churchill counties, per the DMV fee page. County assessors can exempt some veterans, disabled veterans, surviving spouses and blind residents from part of the Governmental Services Tax; not modeled. First registrations also pay license plate fees, a VIN inspection where required, and emissions testing in urban Clark and Washoe areas; the DMV fee page lists these without amounts, so they are not included. Nevada dealer sales collect sales tax on the purchase price; private-party sales are not taxed. Neither is included. The DMV fee page lists no electric or hybrid vehicle surcharge for passenger cars. Motorcycles pay an extra $6 safety fee. Transfers of registration add $6 (NRS 482.480(6)); not included.
