Common questions

How are Ohio registration fees calculated?

Ohio charges a $36 annual registration fee for a passenger car plus an $8 deputy registrar fee for a one-year renewal. Model-year 2009 and newer hybrids pay an extra $100 a year and electric vehicles $200. Local permissive taxes of up to $30 a vehicle are added by taxing district and are not included here. A title costs $18, or $23 in a few counties.

Where can I confirm my final registration cost?

Confirm the final amount with Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). Its official website is linked below the calculator and in this guide’s sources.

What other limitations should I consider?

Permissive (local) taxes are not included. They are set by taxing district (city, township or county), not one amount per county, are charged in $5 steps, and cannot exceed $30 per vehicle; they can be halved for registrations of 7 months or less. Your renewal notice shows your amount. Multi-year renewals multiply the registration fee, permissive tax and fuel type fee by the number of years; the deputy registrar fee follows the 1-5 year scale. Plug-in hybrids owe $150 a year; the calculator's 'hybrid' option uses the $100 conventional hybrid fee. Specialty and personalized plate fees, temporary tags ($23) and plate mailing fees are not included.
